This policy explains how Educate an Orphan collects, uses, protects and shares personal information connected with this website and its educational-support work.
Approved by Educate an Orphan on 10 September 2026. This policy will be reviewed at least annually and whenever our services or legal obligations materially change.

1. Who we are and what this policy covers
Educate an Orphan (EAO) is a Nigeria-based educational-support initiative. This policy covers personal data processed through the EAO website, enquiries, donations, sponsorship activity and programme administration. EAO acts as the data controller for information it decides how and why to use.
2. Information we may collect
We may collect information you provide directly, including your name, email address, telephone number, enquiry details, donation purpose, amount, selected giving frequency and duration, transaction reference and communication preferences. When online payments are enabled, card or bank credentials are entered directly into Paystack’s secure payment service. EAO may receive limited payment identifiers and mandate status needed to reconcile and manage donations, but does not receive or store full card numbers, PINs, one-time passwords or online-banking passwords. We may also receive limited technical information such as device type, browser, pages visited and security logs when this is necessary to operate and protect the website.
3. Information about children and beneficiaries
EAO may receive information about a child from a parent, guardian, school or trusted referral contact to assess need, deliver support and monitor progress. This may include identity, age, school, attendance, academic, welfare and support information. EAO will collect only what is reasonably necessary, use appropriate consent or another lawful basis, restrict access and avoid publishing identifying details without appropriate authorisation and a safeguarding assessment. A child’s dignity and best interests take priority over fundraising or publicity.
4. How and why we use information
We may use personal information to respond to enquiries; process and account for donations; provide receipts and programme updates; assess and administer educational support; communicate with guardians and schools; monitor academic participation; prevent fraud or misuse; keep financial and governance records; comply with legal obligations; and improve our services. Depending on the activity, processing may be based on consent, steps connected with a request or agreement, compliance with law, protection of vital interests, public interest or EAO’s legitimate interests where those interests do not override an individual’s rights.
5. When information may be shared
EAO will not sell personal information. We may share only the information necessary with schools, guardians, authorised volunteers, professional advisers, regulators and trusted service providers that support hosting, email, reporting, fraud prevention or payment processing. Paystack will process payment information under its own notices and its agreement with EAO. We may also disclose information where required by law or where reasonably necessary to protect a child or another person from serious harm.
6. International processing and security
Some technology providers may process information outside Nigeria. Before using such providers, EAO will assess the transfer and use safeguards required by applicable data-protection law. EAO will use proportionate administrative, technical and organisational measures—including access controls, limited permissions, secure credentials, backups and staff confidentiality—to reduce the risk of loss, misuse or unauthorised disclosure. No online system can be guaranteed completely secure.
7. Retention
EAO will keep personal information only for as long as it is needed for the purpose collected, to protect children, maintain financial and programme records, resolve disputes and meet legal or regulatory obligations. Retention periods will be documented and reviewed. Information that is no longer required will be securely deleted, anonymised or archived with restricted access.
8. Your data-protection rights
Subject to applicable law, you may ask EAO for information about its use of your personal data; request access, correction, deletion, restriction or portability; object to certain processing; or withdraw consent where consent is the basis used. You may also object to direct marketing and complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission. EAO may need to verify your identity and may retain information where the law or safeguarding responsibilities require it.
9. Cookies and analytics
The website uses only technology necessary to deliver and secure the service by default. If enabled, Cloudflare Web Analytics measures aggregate traffic and performance without advertising cookies or cross-site user tracking. If EAO later introduces advertising, profiling or other non-essential cookies, this policy and the website’s consent controls must be updated before those tools are enabled.
